Unity Learning Institute (ULi) has a professional English Language Enhancement Team (ELET) with expertise and extensive experience in teaching & learning English Language and the IELTS Preparatory Courses. All ELET members have TESOL qualifications and/or a Master's in Applied Linguistics and are Native English Teachers. The ELET Team provides effective and interactive teaching & learning for the English Language and IELTS Preparatory Courses to facilitate students reaching the required programme entry requirements.

ULi offers the following Five English Language and IELTS Preparatory Courses, each with a duration of 12 weeks, and delivered in Blended Mode (Face-to-Face plus Online):

(1) Foundation level: < IELTS 3.5

For students with minimum knowledge of the English Language.

(Preparing the students’ interests for studying courses in English Language)

(2) Preliminary level: IELTS 3.5 – 4.5

For students with limited knowledge of the English Language.

• (Preparing the students for studying courses in English Language)

(3) Intermediate level: IELTS 4.5 – 5.5

For students with certain command of the English language and can communicate in basic situations.

(Preparing the students for College Studies, such as Associate Degree & Higher Diploma programmes)

(4) Higher level: IELTS 5.5 – 6.5

For students with a moderate level of English proficiency.

(Preparing the students for University Studies at Bachelor Degree programmes)

(5) Intensive Course: IELTS 6.0 – 6.5/7.0

For students who have a reasonable command of English and can handle communication in most situations.

(Preparing the students for Postgraduate Studies)

Course Descriptions

(1) Foundation level

Completion Outcomes:

• Show interests in learning the English Language

(2) Preliminary IELTS Course: 3.5 to 4.5

Completion Outcomes:

• Ability to understand and use simple English in familiar contexts.
• Improved skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking at a preliminary level.
• Preparedness to take the IELTS exam with a focus on achieving a score of 4.5 or higher.

(3) Intermediate level: IELTS Course: 4.5 to 5.5

Completion Outcomes:

• Enhanced ability to understand and produce simple written and spoken English.
• Development of strategies for dealing with everyday communication and academic tasks.
• Confidence to aim for a score of 5.5 in the IELTS exam.

(4) Higher level: IELTS Course: 5.5 to 6.5

Completion Outcomes:

• Improved comprehension of standard English in various contexts.
• Ability to engage in more complex conversations and write structured texts.
• Readiness to achieve a score of 6.5 on the IELTS exam.

(5) Intensive Course: IELTS 6.0 to 6.5 /7.0

Completion Outcomes:

• Enhanced ability to understand and produce detailed texts and engage in discussions on a variety of topics.
• Development of critical thinking skills and strategies for the IELTS exam.
• Preparedness to achieve a score of 6.5 or higher on the IELTS exam.

These courses are designed to progressively build language skills and confidence, helping students achieve their desired IELTS scores.

Teaching & Learning Hours and Delivery

(1) Teaching & Learning Hours

The total teaching & learning hours consist of the following:

• Face-to-face teaching: 4 hrs per week (64 hrs)
• Guided work: 3 hrs per week (48 hrs)

Total: 8.5 hrs per week x 12 weeks = 112 hrs.

It is a general practice to provide at least 100 teaching & learning hours to increase a student’s IELTS score by 0.5 Band.

(2) Delivery

• The 64 hrs of face-to-face teaching will be conducted in the classroom. Usually, these will be delivered in two 2-hour sessions after the students’ normal
• daytime studies. For instance, 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm or 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm, as it is more convenient for getting the students to attend the English Language and IELTS preparatory courses.
• The 48-hour Guided Works will require students to prepare tasks and/or
• assignments each week for performance or submission, and the IELTS Teachers will provide feedback either on the assignment or at the Face-to-Face teaching & learning sessions.

Placement Test

To ensure students are matched to the right course and expected to succeed in the allotted study time, a placement test will be administered. This will focus on the two productive skills – writing and speaking. Candidates will write a short-timed composition in 25 minutes and participate in a live discussion for five minutes.
